Traditional Black Seeds for Everyday Cooking
Desi Regime Kalonji is a traditional spice known for its distinctive aroma and slightly bitter, peppery flavour. Also commonly known as Black Seed, Nigella Seeds or Nigella sativa, Kalonji is widely used in Pakistani, Indian and South Asian cooking.
Use whole Kalonji in naan, paratha, pickles, curries, vegetables, lentils and spice blends to add its characteristic flavour and aroma.
Simple Serving Recipe — Kalonji Aloo
Ingredients
- Potatoes — 500 g, cubed
- Desi Regime Kalonji — 1 tsp
- Onion — 1 medium, sliced
- Tomato — 1 medium, chopped
- Green chilli — 1, sliced
- Cooking oil — 2 tbsp
- Salt — to taste
- Red chilli powder — ½ tsp
- Turmeric Powder — ¼ tsp
Method
- Heat oil and add Kalonji. Sauté briefly.
- Add onion and cook until softened.
- Add tomato, green chilli, salt, red chilli powder and turmeric.
- Cook until the tomato softens.
- Add potatoes and mix well.
- Cover and cook until the potatoes are tender, stirring occasionally.
- Serve hot with roti or paratha.
Serves: Approximately 3–4 people, depending on portion size.
